Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. The first chemical experiment on Fl suggested that Fl is a noble-gas-like element, while the second studies suggested that Fl has a volatile-metal-like character. To obtain more reliable conclusion, we performed further experimental studies on Fl adsorption behavior on Si oxide and gold surfaces. The present results suggest that Fl is highly volatile and less reactive than the volatile metal, Hg, but has higher reactivity than the noble gas, Rn.

Online gas-solid adsorption studies with single atom quantities of Hg, Tl, and Pb on SiO$$_{2}$$ and Au surfaces were carried out using short-lived radioisotopes with half-lives in the range of 4-49 s. This is a model study to measure adsorption enthalpies of superheavy elements Cn, Nh, and Fl. The short-lived isotopes were produced and separated by the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI. The products were stopped in He gas, and flushed into gas chromatography columns made of Si detectors whose surfaces were covered by SiO$$_{2}$$ or Au. The short-lived Tl and Pb were successfully measured by the Si detectors with the SiO$$_{2}$$ surface at room temperature. On the other hand, the Hg did not adsorb on the SiO$$_{2}$$ surface, but adsorbed on the Au surface. The results demonstrated that the adsorption properties of short-lived Hg, Tl, and Pb could be studied with this setup, and that this method is applicable to the experiment for Cn, Nh, and Fl.

A new experimental method "vacuum chromatography" has been developed to measure adsorption enthalpy of superheavy elements, and its feasibility has been examined using short-lived thallium isotopes. The short-lived thallium isotopes were produced at the JAEA tandem accelerator. The thallium ion beam prepared with an on-line isotope separator which ionized and mass-separated the thallium isotopes was injected into an isothermal vacuum chromatography apparatus. A temperature-dependent adsorption property of thallium atom on SiO$$_{2}$$ surface were measured. The adsorption enthalpy of thallium was determined to be 158 kJ/mol. The thallium is a homolog of element 113. Thus, the vacuum chromatography developed in this study enables us to perform chemical experiments for short-lived superheavy elements with half-lives of a order of one second.

A method based on flow injection extraction chromatography coupled with on-line ICP-MS (FI-EC-ICPMS) for simultaneous thorium and uranium determination in human body fluids (urine and blood) has been developed and validated. By using extraction chromatography, the limits of detection for $$^{232}$$Th, $$^{235}$$U and $$^{238}$$U were achieved 0.06 ng l$$^{-1}$$, 0.0014 ng l$$^{-1}$$ and 0.05 ng l$$^{-1}$$, respectively. The FI-EC-ICPMS method accuracy was 102.4% and 101.5% with overall precision (RSDmax at 95% CI) of 5.3% and 4.9% for $$^{232}$$Th and $$^{238}$$U, respectively. The $$^{235}$$U/$$^{238}$$U atom ratio is measured with 1.8% precision. The technique was employed for simultaneous thorium and uranium analyses in human urine and blood samples after microwave digestion.

A quantitative electrolysis of an electro-active species in a sample solution can be achieved very rapidly when the solution is allowed to flow through and be electrolyzed at a column electrode. Complete electrolysis of the species is attained with a small over-voltage, even if the electrode reaction is slow. The electrolytic method using the column electrode is suitable for automated or remote-controlled operation. Because of unmatched advantages, the column-electrode electrolysis method has been widely applied to the coulometric determination of species in a flowing sample solution and to liquid chromatography as a coulometric detector. This technique is especially favorable for elucidating mechanism of such complicated reactions as that involving unstable intermediates. In the present article, a principle and a feature of the column-electrode electrolysis are presented and the advantages of these methods are reviewed based on recent works on its application to flow-injection analysis and to a study of the redox reaction of actinide ions or the reaction of short-lived radicals.

Elemental groups separation for high-level waste partitioning using a novel silica-based CMPO extraction-resin

Hoshi, Harutaka*; Wei, Y.*; Kumagai, Mikio*; Asakura, Toshihide; Uchiyama, Gunzo*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 39(Suppl.3), p.874 - 877, 2002/11

To facilitate the management of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) and minimize its long-term radiological risk in geologic disposal, we have proposed an advanced partitioning process by extraction chromatography using a minimal organic solvent and compact equipment to separate long-lived minor actinides (MA) and specific fission products (FP) such as Zr and Mo from nitrate acidic HLLW solution. Novel silica-based extraction-resin for elemental groups separation was prepared by impregnating CMPO (octyl(phenyl)-N, N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide) into a macro-reticular styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer immobilized in porous silica particles with a diameter of 50 $$mu$$m (SiO$$_{2}$$-P). Separation experiments for simulated HLLW solutions containing a trace amount of $$^{243}$$Am (III) and macro amounts of typical FP elements were carried out by column chromatography. It was found that the elements in the simulated HLLW were successfully separated to the following three groups: Cs-Sr-Rh-Ru, Pd-Ln-Am and Zr-Mo.

A method for the determination of Cl-36 in biological shield concrete of nuclear reactor was developed. Cl in the concrete sample was extracted quantitatively by pyrohydrolysis at 900 ºC and recovered in Na2CO3 solution for subsequent measurement of Cl-36 by liquid scintillation counting. WO3 was used as an accelerator in the pyrohydrolysis. The Cl extraction procedure was optimized by investigating experimental conditions with the use of ion chromatography and its recovery was evaluated by the analysis of the geochemical reference samples. Detection limit of Cl-36 was 0.02 Bq g-1 for sample weight of 2g. Relative standard deviation was 3 – 7 % for the samples containing 0.5 Bq g-1 levels of 36Cl. The newly developed method was applied to determine Cl-36 in biological shield concrete of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor.

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 372(5-6), p.532 - 536, 2002/03

An X-ray spectrometry method has been developed for the determination of Ca-41 in the biological shield concrete of nuclear reactors. To isolate Ca from other elements, the concrete sample was first decomposed with nitric, hydrofluoric and perchloric acids. Calcium was then separated from other coexisting radionuclides by ion-exchange chromatography and recovered as an oxalate precipitate. X rays at 3.3 keV from Ca-41 in the calcium oxalate pellet were measured. Detection efficiency of the X-ray measurement at 3.3 keV was calculated from those obtained by measuring Fe-55 standard pellets at 5.9 keV using mass absorption coefficients of the calcium oxalate pellet at each X-ray energy value. A lower limit of determination of 8 Bq g-1 was obtained for a sample weight of 1 g.
